Ulta is one of the largest beauty retailers in the world, and it’s a great place to get your foot in the door within the beauty industry.
Whether you’re seeking for this to be your first job out of high school or you’re looking to become a general manager at the store, there are endless possibilities. So, what are they?
Ulta Careers: What Are They?
Ulta is one of the fastest-growing stores in the beauty industry. All Ulta locations have a retail store and an in-house salon, so there are numerous job opportunities.
Ulta has locations all over the United States, with over 1,100 stores in 48 states. They employ more than 35,000 associates in these locations.
Also, Ulta has five distribution centers and a corporate office, so there are even more Ulta careers available in these areas.
You must be at least 18 years old to work at Ulta, whether as a sales associate or in the salon. Hours may slightly differ by location, but most stores are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Sunday to Saturday.
A perk of working at Ulta is that they require little to no experience in their entry-level positions. That makes it an excellent position for those starting out in the beauty or retail industries, or someone looking for a side job. Ulta also hires seasonal workers during the holiday months.
Although little experience is required, you should have some level of knowledge of beauty products. Ulta sells a wide variety of beauty products, such as makeup, nail care, skincare, haircare, and fragrances.
Retail Store Opportunities
If you’re looking for a position in the retail industry, there are various Ulta careers in the storefront to choose from. These include:
The most basic entry-level position at Ulta is the Beauty Advisor. Beauty Advisors are the sales associates of the store, and are responsible for cashier duties, stocking the fixtures with merchandise, and engaging with customers.
Specialty Beauty Advisors and Prestige Beauty Advisors are a step up from this and require a bit more experience. Specialty advisors work in either the Clinique or Lancôme departments, whereas Prestige advisors work with all other prestige makeup brands, such as Stila, Too Faced, and Tarte.
Both of these positions require performing makeup applications, skincare analyses, and product demonstrations. You heavily engage with guests to help them determine the best products for their needs and work to recruit new guests.
Brow Waxing Experts and Specialty Artists for MAC require specializations in the beauty industry.
A Brow Waxing Expert is responsible for demonstrating and performing all brow services, such as brow waxings, tints, and trims.
A Specialty Artist for MAC upholds the same duties as a Specialty Beauty Advisor, but they are also responsible for meeting sales goals and represent both Ulta and MAC.
MSCs, Prestige Sales Managers, Retail Operations Managers, and Retail Sales Managers all make up the leadership team at Ulta. These positions are responsible for overseeing the staff and ensuring that all standards are upheld in the store. These all require a high level of experience.
The General Manager is the manager of the entire Ulta store.
There are various opportunities available within the salon. Some of these are excellent starting positions for those looking to build a portfolio, and others are for more experienced workers in the salon industry.
The Guest Service Coordinator is the customer-focused position within the salon. In this position, you assist guests, schedule appointments, and manage guest service standards.

Ulta careers provide you with medical coverage opportunities. These options include two medical PPO plans, as well as dental and vision insurance.
The beauty retailer offers various other insurance options, including short- and long-term disability, basic life insurance, supplemental life and AD&D insurance, pet insurance, and home and auto insurance.
There is also a 401(k) plan available to associates who are at least 21 years old. And it comes with company matching.

The Ulta careers website makes the job application straightforward and easy to follow. You can search by position, location, or both.
Once you’ve decided on a position and location to apply for, you simply hit “Apply now.”
There are various questions that Ulta will ask you on the application that you should be prepared for.
First, you’ll be asked to fill out your basic personal information. This basic info will include your name, address, phone number, email, social security number, and how you heard about the position.
Next, you’ll be asked to upload a resume. It is an optional step, but we highly recommend it. An employer will appreciate that you put forth the extra effort, and it will show all of your information in one place.
Ulta will then ask you some pre-employment questions. These are some pretty standard questions that come with most job applications.
Some of these questions include:
Finally, you will be asked various assessment questions. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions; they are merely assessing your personality to determine if you would be a good fit for the store and position.
If you go through the application process and land an interview, congratulations! You’re one step closer to securing one of the Ulta careers that many people would love to have.
Maybe this is your first interview, and you’re a bit nervous. Or, perhaps you just aren’t sure what to expect from an interview with Ulta. Here are our tips to nailing your interview.
Bring a copy of your resume
Many people don’t think to do this with a retail position, but this will help you stand out from the rest of the applicants. Even though you already submitted your resume in your application, they’ll appreciate that you brought a hard copy for them.
Bringing an extra copy will give you a leg up for entry-level positions. It’s also crucial for leadership positions, and will most likely be expected by the interviewer.
If you’re applying to a salon position or a position such as a Specialty Beauty Advisor, bring a copy of your portfolio, too.
Again, even if you’re interviewing as a sales associate, you want to make a good impression by dressing professionally.
You can wear a modest dress, skirt, and blouse, or even a nice pair of pants with a blouse. Appropriate heels and flats are your best option for shoes.
Have your hair and makeup done
A lot of interviewing tips will recommend minimal makeup and to put your hair up. However, applying and interviewing for a beauty store is a bit of a different story.
They will want to see that you’re knowledgeable about beauty, and the best way to do that is to show them.
You don’t have to do anything fancy with your hair. However, we suggest leaving it down and styling it in some way. That will show them that you know about hair care and styling.
If you’re applying for a store position, you should probably keep your makeup more on the natural side. However, take your time doing it and make sure that it looks the best that it possibly can.
If you’re applying for a position where you’ll be doing others’ makeup, such as a specialty advisor, then you can be a little more creative with your makeup to show off your skills.
Brush up on your beauty knowledge
Because this is a job working in the beauty industry, they’ll be looking for candidates with a decent amount of knowledge on the subject.
They may ask you some beauty-related questions, such as what the current beauty trends are. Read some beauty books or watch some of your favorite beauty gurus on YouTube to prepare.
Ulta Careers: Landing the Job
If you have a love for makeup and helping people, then you’re already qualified for the job. Make sure to showcase the best version of yourself in your application and the interview, and you’ll be more likely to get the job!
It could get your foot in the door in the beauty industry, or you could end up having a life-long career with Ulta. The possibilities are endless!
