Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

If you want to work as a YMCA lifeguard, there are a few different prerequisites that you need to keep in mind:

  • Ability to swim 300 yards continuously and implementing a correct front crawl or breaststroke
  • Ability to surface dive to 10 feet, grab a 10 pound object, go to the surface and swim 20 more yards to the starting point
  • Ability to exit the pool without using a ladder
  • Having an up-to-date Lifeguard Certification either from the YMCA or from the American Red Cross
  • Being at least 16 years of age
  • Having CPR and first aid certifications

If you want to work as a YMCA naturalist, there are a few different requirements that you must meet. These include:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have a love of nature
  • Be able to research and write lesson plans that are aligned with the national state and education plans
  • Conduct natural science lessons
  • Engage volunteers, staff, and participants in the natural science arena
  • Bachelors degree is preferred but not mandatory
  • One year of teaching experience is required, or two years of work experience on a science field project
