Ulta is one of the largest beauty retailers in the world, and it’s a great place to get your foot in the door within the beauty industry.

Whether you’re seeking for this to be your first job out of high school or you’re looking to become a general manager at the store, there are endless possibilities. So, what are they?

Ulta Careers: What Are They?

Ulta is one of the fastest-growing stores in the beauty industry. All Ulta locations have a retail store and an in-house salon, so there are numerous job opportunities.

Ulta has locations all over the United States, with over 1,100 stores in 48 states. They employ more than 35,000 associates in these locations.

Also, Ulta has five distribution centers and a corporate office, so there are even more Ulta careers available in these areas.

You must be at least 18 years old to work at Ulta, whether as a sales associate or in the salon. Hours may slightly differ by location, but most stores are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Sunday to Saturday.

A perk of working at Ulta is that they require little to no experience in their entry-level positions. That makes it an excellent position for those starting out in the beauty or retail industries, or someone looking for a side job. Ulta also hires seasonal workers during the holiday months.

Although little experience is required, you should have some level of knowledge of beauty products. Ulta sells a wide variety of beauty products, such as makeup, nail care, skincare, haircare, and fragrances.

Retail Store Opportunities

If you’re looking for a position in the retail industry, there are various Ulta careers in the storefront to choose from. These include:

The most basic entry-level position at Ulta is the Beauty Advisor. Beauty Advisors are the sales associates of the store, and are responsible for cashier duties, stocking the fixtures with merchandise, and engaging with customers.

Specialty Beauty Advisors and Prestige Beauty Advisors are a step up from this and require a bit more experience. Specialty advisors work in either the Clinique or Lancôme departments, whereas Prestige advisors work with all other prestige makeup brands, such as Stila, Too Faced, and Tarte.

Both of these positions require performing makeup applications, skincare analyses, and product demonstrations. You heavily engage with guests to help them determine the best products for their needs and work to recruit new guests.

Brow Waxing Experts and Specialty Artists for MAC require specializations in the beauty industry.

A Brow Waxing Expert is responsible for demonstrating and performing all brow services, such as brow waxings, tints, and trims.

A Specialty Artist for MAC upholds the same duties as a Specialty Beauty Advisor, but they are also responsible for meeting sales goals and represent both Ulta and MAC.

MSCs, Prestige Sales Managers, Retail Operations Managers, and Retail Sales Managers all make up the leadership team at Ulta. These positions are responsible for overseeing the staff and ensuring that all standards are upheld in the store. These all require a high level of experience.

The General Manager is the manager of the entire Ulta store.

There are various opportunities available within the salon. Some of these are excellent starting positions for those looking to build a portfolio, and others are for more experienced workers in the salon industry.

  • ​Skin Care Experts
  • Skin Therapist (Esthetician)
  • Designer (Hair Stylist)

The Guest Service Coordinator is the customer-focused position within the salon. In this position, you assist guests, schedule appointments, and manage guest service standards.

Brow Waxing Experts and Skin Care Experts are focused on their respective services, brows or skincare. The brow experts will perform all brow services, such as waxing and tinting. The skin experts recommend products and help guests solve their skincare concerns.

A Skin Therapist at Ulta is the position for a licensed esthetician. This position has the same duties as skincare experts, but are licensed in their field, so they can go more in-depth with customers.

The Designer position is for hairstylists. Designers perform all hair services at the Ulta salon, from cuts to blowouts to color.

Finally, the Salon Manager is the overseer of the entire salon. They recruit and train the entire salon team and ensure they have knowledge of products and services.

Various benefits come with Ulta careers. However, benefit eligibility will depend on your associate position and employment status, such as whether you’re full-time or part-time.

Ulta careers provide you with medical coverage opportunities. These options include two medical PPO plans, as well as dental and vision insurance.

The beauty retailer offers various other insurance options, including short- and long-term disability, basic life insurance, supplemental life and AD&D insurance, pet insurance, and home and auto insurance.

The Ulta careers website makes the job application straightforward and easy to follow. You can search by position, location, or both.

Once you’ve decided on a position and location to apply for, you simply hit “Apply now.”

There are various questions that Ulta will ask you on the application that you should be prepared for.

First, you’ll be asked to fill out your basic personal information. This basic info will include your name, address, phone number, email, social security number, and how you heard about the position.

Next, you’ll be asked to upload a resume. It is an optional step, but we highly recommend it. An employer will appreciate that you put forth the extra effort, and it will show all of your information in one place.

Ulta will then ask you some pre-employment questions. These are some pretty standard questions that come with most job applications.

Some of these questions include:

  • ​Are you authorized to work in the U.S.?
  • ​Will you now or in the future require sponsorship for an immigration-related employment benefit?
  • ​Are you 18 or older?
  • If offered employment, are you willing to submit to a drug screening test?
